Why I’m Not Afraid For My Friend

Our dear friend Kristy is crazy about Jesus! Tomorrow she flys to a country where persecution of Christians is intense—to tell them about Jesus.

Pray for Kristy and her team. She’s single and knows this trip could be dangerous.

Society sometimes refers to single people as unattached. Being unattached can give a person more freedom to go and do as they please.

In a real sense, God wants us all to be unattached? The apostle Paul writes:

“Those who use the things of the world should not become attached to them. For this world as we know it will soon pass away. I want you to be free from the concerns of this life.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭7‬:‭31‬-‭32‬ ‭

Paul, are you kidding? Can we really be free from the concerns of this life? According to him we can—if we stay unattached.

Prior to those verses Paul encourages single believers to stay single—unless they can’t control their sexual urges. This way they can give their undivided devotion to their Bridegroom Jesus.

Paul then tells married believers to be careful not to let their marriages distract them from serving Jesus.

Some people think having a happy marriage and family is the pinnacle of success in life. It’s not. If it were, all single people would feel like failures. That would mean Jesus was a failure!

We live in Colorado Springs, the home of Focus on the Family, a wonderful ministry God has used in powerful ways. Nowhere in scripture however are we told to focus on our families. We are told to fix our eyes on Jesus. (See Hebrews 12:2)

When we focus on Jesus, we won’t need a spouse or others to complete us. When we are staring at Him, the things of this world lose their appeal. Pleasing Him becomes our highest priority, no matter the cost.

Kristy is risking her life going to share Christ in a Muslim country. She would tell you her life is not really hers to risk. She gave it to Jesus years ago.

Friend, this world and everything we crave will soon pass away. We can truly be free from the concerns of this life when we let go of the stuff of earth and take hold of Jesus!
