My Invisible Friend

Growing up, I never had an imaginary friend. I still don’t—but I do have an invisible friend who is anything but imaginary!

Some of His names I love are Comforter—Counselor—Spirit of Truth—the Helper. I prefer to just call Him Holy Spirit.

Having Him as a friend makes every day an adventure.

May… the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” 2 Corinthians 13:14

I love that the dictionary defines fellowship as “a friendly relationship, companionship, sharing together.” Just as we can fellowship with our human friends, the apostle Paul says we can have intimate fellowship with an invisible Friend, the Holy Spirit.

Crazy, huh?

A cursory glance through the book of Acts should convince anyone that the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force, but a real live person. He can be lied to and grieved. He talks, feels emotion, makes decisions, and gives us gifts. He directs and empowers believers to do miracles.

My favorite thing He does is reveal Christ to us.

Jesus told Thomas, “Do you believe because you see me? How happy are those who believe without seeing me!” John 20:29

Jesus was talking about future believers like you and me who would come to know Him intimately without ever seeing Him physically. That’s the work of the Holy Spirit.

I love how Peter says it.

Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” 1 Peter‬ ‭1‬:‭8‬ ‭

As the first Christian martyr was being stoned, “Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.” Acts 7:55

Stephen’s invisible Friend, the Holy Spirit, was letting him see what those around him were unable to see—the unseen realm, where angels and demons exist, and where Christ is seated at the right hand of God?

Isn’t this mind blowing?

Many friends have impacted my life in positive ways, but none more powerfully than the Holy Spirit.

He is by far the best friend I’ve ever had—yet never seen!

What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived— the things God has prepared for those who love Him— these are the things God has revealed to us by His Spirit.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭
