Did You Vote?

I’ve noticed apathy in many I speak with about this week’s election. Some doubt their vote will even make a difference. Others think Christians should not get involved with politics. What they are really saying is, “Let unbelievers decide what’s best for society.” We’ve seen how well that’s worked.

What does the Bible say about our civic duty?

“Work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.” Jeremiah 29:7

One way we can work for the peace and prosperity of the place we live is by voting for godly people and policies.

“When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan.” Proverbs‬ ‭29‬:‭2‬

That is so true. But what do you do when there are no godly leaders to vote for?

Jesus is not on the ballot, so our choice will always be between the lesser of two evils. By not voting, we are saying we are okay with the most evil candidate having power.

When there seem to be no godly candidates running, here is my approach to voting. First, I pray for wisdom.

Second, I look at the positive and negative results of the policies of those running for office. “Wisdom is proved right by its results.” Luke 7:35.

Third, I will vote for the politician whose policies come closest to what God values?

The Lord commands us to help (not enable) the poor, and protect the weak. The weakest and most vulnerable people in our society are the children inside and outside the womb.

Jesus said to not mess with kids. Children are a big deal to God. They should be a big deal to us and our government as well.

Which political candidates are working to stop the confusion and mutilation of young children suffering from gender dysphoria? Which candidates are okay with teachers telling children to not tell their parents about the sexual grooming they are receiving. Answers to those questions will determine who I vote for.

One day Jesus will reign, and every knee will bow to Him. What a day that will be! Until then, though every candidate is flawed, I will still vote. It’s one of the greatest responsibilities we Americans have.

Of course I’m not expecting any candidate to usher in God’s kingdom. At best, perhaps they might slow our descent and delay some of the suffering ungodly policies bring.

Whoever gets elected, I will pray they fear God more than the people they govern. It’s holy fear that will be their motivation to govern God’s way.

And God’s way is always the best.

“Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.” Proverbs‬ ‭9‬:‭10‬ ‭
