If God knew before He created us the agony Christ would have to suffer to save us, why not come up with a pain-free plan instead?
Possibly the hardest verse in the Bible for me to grasp is Isaiah 53:10:
“It was the Lord’s will to crush Him and cause Him to suffer.”
Some have interpreted that verse to mean God found some strange pleasure in watching His Son suffer. That would make Him a masochist. I don’t believe that for a second. Just because something is God’s will doesn’t mean He delights in it being fulfilled. For example:
“As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live.” Ezekiel 33:11
If God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, He definitely took no pleasure in the death of His righteous Son. The Father’s heart must have been broken to see Christ suffer such agony. Even Jesus in essence said, “Father, if there is a less painful way to save their souls, please do it!”
But apparently there was no other way. Christ had to die the way He did.
Consider this—God is love, and love must always find a way to express itself. The greater the love, the greater the expression must be!
“The greatest love a person can show is to die for his friends.” John 15:13 NCV
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son” John 3:16
So yes, God could have come up with a pain-free plan instead of a horrific crucifixion to save us. Instead, He chose to demonstrate His love in the greatest way He could think of—so we would get it!
Are you getting it? Are you seeing how much you mean to Him? I’m teary as I write this. It seems too much to comprehend—too good to be true!
But it is true! God let Christ suffer incredibly so we would know how incredibly loved we are by Him!
“For the joy set before him he endured the cross” Hebrews 12:2
“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” Ephesians 3:16, 18-19

I had never thought of Jesus’ crucifixion in this way but have always been so deeply impacted when I consider the price he paid to buy our freedom. This is profound, Walt. Thanks for sharing

It is so deeply humbling when I think about what he went through and still loves us, and that we can be hurt so easily and lose friends and family. His forgiveness and love is endless, how much better the world would be if we could all be more like the example that He showed us. Thanks for sharing Walt!
