The Blessing of Losing

In 2024, my wife and I lost a huge sum of money. I hate losing, but sometimes losing can be a blessing.

Through losing, God knows I can gain something much more valuable than what I lost.

Jesus said to find your life you must lose it. He told people that to be His disciple they would have to give up everything.

Moses lost riches in Egypt to follow God into the wilderness. Saul (the Pharisee) lost more than his name when he chose to follow Christ.

The perfect example of losing something inferior to gain something better is when the Father prunes us so we will be more fruitful.

Some think the real winners are the rich. Jesus said being rich makes it harder to enter the kingdom of God. Still, many of us keep accumulating more stufflike the rich man in the Bible who tore down his storage barns to build bigger barns, thinking he would have a secure future.

The flesh is never satisfied.

Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.” Ecclesiastes 5:10

“Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.” 1 Timothy 6:6

Truly wealthy people have something money can’t buygodliness and contentment. Let that sink in. To be Christlike and content should be our greatest desire in life.

I’m learning to accept the blessing of losing. If I must lose everything to gain Christ, so be it. Jesus is worth more than everything this world has to offer!

“But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ” Philippians‬ ‭3‬:‭7‬-‭8

“I advise you to buy from me gold made pure in fire so you can be truly rich.” Revelation 3:18

“I have made you pure, but not by fire, as silver is made pure. I have purified you by giving you troubles.” Isaiah‬ ‭48‬:‭10‬

  1. Another great, meaning-full post, Walt! I’m sorry you lost a large sum of money. That’s gotta be hard.

After Tom died, I had to sell the house and the business and still owed. His illness and our inability to get a proper diagnosis meant we had to pay for a lot of repetitive tests, etc. Each new doctor wanted to order his own system’s tests. Those MRIs and CT scans can add up! And the one medication he needed most was not covered—$1200/month.

Which is why I had to sell furniture and other possessions.

At one point, I cried out to the Lord, “I will NOT not-love You!”

He was with me throughout. Indeed, as Job said, “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

    Love you guys!! Patti
