Need a Good Therapist?

We used to live next door to a psychologist. One day I said to him, “You must love your job, helping people get healed of their emotional wounds.” I will never forget his response.

“I don’t heal people. I just help them cope.”

I’m not knocking therapy. It’s improved the mental health of millions. However, it’s effectiveness often has to do with the skill of the therapist.

My therapist is awesome! I’ve been going to him for years. His counseling skills are out of this world. He does more than help me cope. He helps me heal. What else I love about him is I don’t have to make an appointment to see him. He is available to talk 24/7.

Perhaps you’ve met him? He is described by Jesus as “The Counselor.”

Meet my therapist—the Spirit of Truth, aka the Holy Spirit.

We all have dark thoughts that we need to share with someone wiser than us. By dark thoughts I mean any thought that doesn’t align with God’s thoughts. God doesn’t think dark thoughts. In Him there is no darkness—only light.

Even King David battled dark thoughts of anxiety.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭23‬ ‭

What a great prayer! David continues in the next verse, “point out anything in me that offends you.”

I often ask the Holy Spirit to point out my blind spots. He always shines the spotlight on them by using the word of God.

“The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.” Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭130‬ ‭

The Holy Spirit’s job is to help us know God’s ways and think His thoughts. That’s great news because God tells us, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

Dark thoughts don’t hold a candle to the thoughts of God. In fact, it’s just the opposite! God’s thoughts hold a candle to our dark thoughts and expose them for the lies they are. Healing takes place the moment we agree with God that we have believed a lie and that His words are absolutely true.

Or as Jesus put it— “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free!”

Thank You Father for sending me the perfect Counselor. Help me to listen and obey everything He says.

“When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of Truth. The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn’t see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17

“No one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.”
