Many in America today are calling President Trump an evil king. If he is, should we still pray for him, honor him, and thank God for him?
“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2
The apostle Peter lived under King Herod, the king who had John the Baptist beheaded. Despite having an evil king who killed one of their spiritual leaders, Peter told the believers…
“Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.” 1 Peter 2:17
Paul and Peter are in agreement that we should pray for, and even honor those in authority. That doesn’t mean we always like their policies or personalities. I vocalized my dislike of our last president, but it didn’t keep me from praying for him.
All who govern are inherently flawed. Only Christ governs righteously and with perfect justice. One day the government will be on His shoulders. I can’t wait!
Until then, I will pray for the president, remembering only Jesus is worthy of worship.
I don’t need a king. I already have One!
“Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth! Serve the Lord with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling. Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities— for his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him!” Psalms 2:10-12
Walt, thank you for this reminder to pray for all who are in authority. If God commands this, there’s a good reason for it. We may not see it, but God is, indeed, at work!

Excellent word, Walt. Dan influenced me from the time we were newlyweds the importance of coving all our leadership and governing forces in prayer. Throughout scripture God proved His ultimate authority in some pretty ugly situations. I take great comfort in trusting a perfect God with imperfect people.
