Living in Light of Eternity

I am having heart surgery on Valentine’s Day. Many have asked if I am worried. I’m not. I gave my heart to Jesus years ago and He still has it.

I’m thankful for my abnormal heart. It’s a constant reminder of how dependent I am on God for every heartbeat. Best of all, when I let it, this heart of mine reminds me to live each day in light of eternity.

The majority of us are living for this world. We focus on how much fun we can cram in to these 80+ years, (if we are lucky).

As the story goes, a young banker was driving his BMW in the mountains, during a snow storm. As he rounded a turn the vehicle slid out of control and toward a deep precipice. At the last moment he unbuckled his seatbelt and jumped from the car. Though he escaped with his life, his left arm was caught near the hinge of the door and torn off at the shoulder. A trucker passing nearby witnessed the accident, stopped his rig, and ran back to see if he could be of help. There standing, in a state of shock, was the banker at the edge of the cliff moaning, “Oh my BMW, my BMW.” The trucker pointed to the banker’s shoulder and said “man you’ve got bigger problems than a car.” With that the banker looked at his shoulder, finally realizing he’d lost his arm, and began crying, “Oh my new Rolex, my new Rolex.”

That story is silly but there is a lot of truth to it. If we are too attached to the things of this world, we will act like fools and not even know it.

Scripture says, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” Colossians 3:2

Why?

This world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭2‬:‭15‬-‭17‬

Dear friends, life is short and all our nice cars, luxurious houses and expensive watches are all going to burn up one day.

When we live in light of eternity, we develop an urgent sense of mission. What are we doing with our lives that will outlive the grave? Let’s don’t focus primarily on this life, but think about what we will be doing a million years from now.

How we live today will affect how we will spend eternity. Soon we will all have to stand before God to give an account for how we lived the lives we were given. The only thing that will outlive the grave is people. So let’s spend our lives loving people — feeding hungry people, ministering to hurting people, pointing people to Jesus. Not to earn God’s love, but because we have received God’s love!

The more heavenly minded we are, the more earthly good we are!

Best of all, Father will be pleased. His heart will be blessed. And so will ours!

And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭15‬

So we make it our goal to please Him … For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭
