Prepare for Departure

It was a warm Spring day. I was 16. My dad and I were playing softball with friends when I heard someone scream. I spun around on the pitcher’s mound to see my father had fallen in centerfield. He died that afternoon of a heart attack at the age of 55.

As I write this, I am 66 and have had a few heart related near-death experiences of my own. I’ve seen many loved ones leave this world. I realize death is part of life, but it still saddens me when I hear that a friend has passed away or is facing a terminal illness.

How does one prepare for death? Here are two suggestions.

First, live each day as if it could be your last. Start your morning asking God to show you what pleases Him and to point out anything in you that displeases Him. Ask Him to love people through you. Talk to Him throughout the day about everything. Remember, you are never alone.

Second, let God wean you off this world. Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell all he had. He was testing him to see if he would be willing to give his all for Jesus. Likewise, God told Abraham to sacrifice his prized son, Isaac.

Today, God is testing us to see if we really value Him above everything. I love how the first century believers “felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.” Acts 4:32. Compared to the infinite worth of Jesus, the stuff of earth meant little to them. They had their eyes on heaven!

Life is so short. It can end in an instant! One minute my dad was catching fly balls and having fun. A few minutes later he was gone. I don’t know when my time here is up but I know the devil can’t take me out one day early!

Scripture says when Christ returns, those believers who are still living will be caught up to meet Him in the air. I can hear Him announcing, “Prepare for departure!”

Lord, show me how to prepare for Your return. Help me to let go of the luggage I’ve been carrying. When the day comes that you call me home, may you find me ready for departure.

  1. May I add a third perspective, as the Bride of Christ, the best is yet to come. Consider How He has waited for you, yearned to hold you. You are His Bride. Listen for the wedding march with the joy of anticipation you are about to see on His face. Enjoy Him now and listen.

  2. This is good. Your two pieces of advice are very helpful. You write from the heart and from experience and also the hope of faith. I thought about this topic a lot while writing Conflicted Faith, since the John Donne Holy Sonnets dwell on death quite a bit (17th century life expectancy wasn’t very high!) Here’s a quick quote from the end of my chapter “Up Yours, Death”:

Death is not the enemy, nor is it to be feared. It is a natural consequence of the Fall. Remember that before that, Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Life, which allowed them to live forever. Only if they ate from the Tree of Knowledge would they die: see Genesis 2:15-17.

Death seems like the final defeat, and so it would be if it were not for the gracious mercy of God. Because of one death – that of Jesus – the impact of death on redeemed humanity is nullified. Instead, it becomes just a gateway into the richness and glory of eternal life in the presence of God Himself. Life here is to be celebrated, and all that God calls us to is to be enjoyed and entered into with all our heart and energy. Because of that, we are not in a hurry to die, but at the same time, we are not afraid of death coming before we feel ready. Paul says it best in a verse we have already looked at: “for to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21). This is the greatest of all win-win solutions – we have eternal life on earth, filled with the Spirit, called and equipped by God “to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) Paul reveled in the works God prepared for him, and yet he could say that to die would be even better – a gain, not a loss!

To paraphrase JD: “Up Yours, Death!”

  3. A place is prepared for us in heaven as we prepare here on earth. Knowing this makes me work that much harder to prepare with much anticipation for the life that lies ahead.❤️✝️
