Trained to Reign

I had a dream that I was playing in a Major League baseball game. More than a dream, God was trying to teach me something.

One of the first base-running rules a ballplayer learns is if there are less than two outs, don’t run on a fly ball.

In my dream I was on base when the batter hit a fly ball. Off I ran, mistakenly thinking there were two outs. Yep—inning ending double play!

Surprisingly, my manager didn’t get angry at me. But then he said, “That will be a $250,000 fine.” I was shocked!

Waking up from the dream, I knew what it meant. Maybe you can relate.

In life we all commit errors. I sure have. Most of the time you can correct the error and avoid much harm. Every so often though, we make a huge mistake and the consequences are enormous and irreversible.

During those times we may feel utterly stupid or think God is angry and punishing us.

The more I learn about the character of God the more I believe He doesn’t blow up in anger when I sin—but He does lovingly discipline me—and it’s painful.

“The Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child. As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children . . . God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.” Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭6‬-‭8‬, ‭10‬-‭11‬ ‭

Yes—The Lord disciplines THOSE HE LOVES!

Because Father loves us so much He wants us to share in His holiness. He disciplines us because he knows what joy we will experience when we are living holy lives. Loving fathers always want the best for their kids.

Spring training is tough on baseball players. Coaches work them hard in preparation for the season ahead. The goal is a World Series ring.

God is training us to be champions in this battle against the world, the flesh, and the devil. At times His discipline may seem extreme and unreasonable.

None of us make it through life without committing errors. We may face some painful penalties due to our mistakes, but if we remember God is training us to be holy, and then submit to His discipline, we will reign in life—more than conquerers.

I’ll take that over a World Series ring any day!

“I have made you pure, but not by fire, as silver is made pure. I have purified you by giving you troubles.” Isaiah‬ ‭48‬:‭10

“… how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!” Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬b‭
