Just Like His Teacher

Teaching my grandson to play an instrument is a blessing. He is very gifted but knows he has much to learn.

“Everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.” Luke 6:40. Jesus was saying, “You can be like Me and do the things I do. But you need to let me train you.”

So how does He train us?

The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John‬ ‭14‬:‭26‬.‭

The Holy Spirit is our personal trainer, teaching us how to walk like Jesus.

Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.” 1 John 2:6

“Walk in love, just as Christ loved us.” Ephesians 5:2.

Walking in love is simply following the promptings of the Holy Spirit. He may nudge us to take someone to lunch, or call or text to give encouragement. Perhaps the Spirit will tell us to buy a grocery gift card for someone who is struggling financially. Maybe He will have us share the good news of Jesus or pray for someone’s healing. The possibilities are endless!

We are being trained how to supernaturally walk in the Spirit. It’s natural to walk in the flesh, following our own selfish desires. That’s why we must receive the Holy Spirit and daily depend on Him. Then, as we consistently let the Spirit control us, we become those, “who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.” Hebrews 5:12-14.

Practice is essential. Jesus said the wise man is the one who hears His words and puts them into practice. I could spend hours teaching my grandson how to play the piano, but he must practice if he wants to get good at it. Paul told Timothy, “Train yourself to be godly. Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 1 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭7-8‭

If we learn to do one thing well in life, let’s learn how to walk in love like Jesus did. The rewards are endless!

Father, thank You for giving us a personal trainer to teach and empower us to do Your will. Help us to recognize and obey the Holy Spirit’s nudges. May we become like our teacher and live a life of love that pleases You.
